Week 6: Post 3

A concept that I find to be interesting and completely true is that communicating in groups is often more effective than individuals working alone. Group synergy is a great example of why groups work better than individuals. Say you have 4 geniuses all working alone, they are all incredibly smart but imagine how smart they would be if they all worked together and shared their ideas with each other. Not only is it sometimes smarter to work in groups but it’s also a lot easier when the work load is large. When working with a group tasks can be split up accordingly so that not just one person is doing all the work alone.

Working in groups also fulfills the three basic interpersonal needs which are inclusion needs, control needs, and affection needs. By working in a group people are showing that they care about what you have to say and what your ideas are, sometimes close relationships and friendships are formed because of the group, and while working in a group other people give us a sense of self.

I agree with your comments, working in groups can be much more effective. I find when working on big projects, the massive amounts of information can become overwhelming to keep straight. When working in a group, not only can the work load be divided up, but you also get to share knowledge. When topics are discussed aloud it helps in memorizing the information. Plus new ideas can be developed when working with others, even when the information collected remains the same. Friendships can develop between people in groups; which without the group involvement may never have existed. I usually dread assigned groups in school, but once the project has ended I am surprised to find the experience was very rewarding.

I agree with your opinion on group synergy. I too feel as though working in groups is more effective than working individually. But that is only true if everyone in the group is willing to do their part in helping the group move forward. When reading about group synergy it made me think about chapter 12 and how Americans are more individualists compared to the Japanese who are more collectivists. I like the idea of being collective when it comes to the working world because you gain so much more by working in groups.
I also agree with you with the discussion of working in groups helps fulfill our interpersonal needs. It's a good way to think about it and tie the needs into the topic, a new way to look at it. :)
